Is Your HTML Newsletter Template Ready For Preview Panes? 3 TipsThis is a featured page

Many email providers, whether they are a free service or software such as Outlook or Lotus Notes, use the preview pane format. Preview panes allow the user to view the top half of the message, thereby giving them a chance to scan the contents quickly before deciding whether to open the entire message and read its full text in detail. The preview pane is a tool that aids the user in filtering through his or her email, but for the sender, it can often pose a greater challenge to engage the reader’s interest in the message. If you are sending an HTML Newsletter in particular, it is important that you keep in mind the use of the preview pane when you create your design. You wouldn’t want the viewer to hastily delete the message because whatever was viewable didn’t catch his or her attention. Here are a few tips on managing to use the Preview Pane to your advantage with your newsletter.

The top portion of your newsletter should contain the most important information that you want to be conveyed to your reader. Whether this is specific text, or links, be sure that it is visible. Many times, it is easy to get carried away in designing a template that has a very attractive header, or a prominent image right at the top. While these would be ideal in a non-preview pane-viewing format, in the preview pane it is quite disastrous.

The second important tip is to avoid putting any images in the top of your email. First, an image may not even load depending on the user’s email settings. Certain services offer the option of not loading images in the message, to save time. Many times, people skim over these emails, irritated by the placeholders where those images would have been. To avoid having this experience, do not fill the top of your message with images, not only because they may not load, but also because they may not accurately represent the content of your message.

Finally, take the time to carefully check the top portion of your message. The preview pane is usually about 440 pixels in width – keep this in mind. If you have access to a service that uses preview pane, be sure to send a draft of your template to this account and see what appears in your preview. Which information have you prioritized? Is it easily accessible to your viewer, or is it hidden amongst the other content? Keep these tips in mind to ensure that your newsletter doesn’t get shortchanged by the preview pane option!
